The Academic Marathon
There is something different about the atmosphere on campus during the assessment season. The excitement and freshness that greeted the beginning of the second semester slowly gave way to a sense of urgency.
Libraries become fuller, study groups become more frequent, and conversations between students often revolve around assignments, tests, deadlines, and examinations.
“The finish line is in sight – but the final stretch can feel like the hardest.
The Final Stretch
For many students, this period feels like running a marathon after months of preparation. The finish line is in sight, but the final stretch often feels the hardest.
Picture a typical student during this period: their desk is covered with textbooks, notes, highlighted pages, and unfinished to-do lists. Their phone buzzes with reminders about upcoming deadlines. Every subject suddenly seems to demand attention at the same time. The pressure can feel overwhelming, and it is easy to believe that everyone else is coping better than you are. But remember: you are not alone.
Most students experience some level of stress during this period. It is a natural response to increased academic demands. However, pressure does not have to control the entire experience.
One Task at a Time
One of the most effective ways to manage academic pressure is through planning. Instead of focusing on everything that needs to be done at once, break your workload into smaller and more manageable goals.
Rather than thinking, “I have so much to study,” focus on what you can accomplish right now:
• Complete one chapter.
• Finish one assignment.
• Revise one topic.
• Attend one study session.
• Take one step closer to your goal.
“You don’t have to finish everything today. Just make progress today.”
Taking things one task at a time can make a heavy workload feel much less intimidating.
Rest Is Part of the Process
Students should also remember that rest is not a luxury. It is a necessity. Many people believe that success comes from sacrificing sleep and studying for endless hours. In reality, a tired mind struggles to concentrate, remember information, and solve problems. Getting enough sleep, taking short breaks, eating well, and maintaining a healthy routine can improve both academic performance and overall wellbeing.
“Rest is not time wasted – it is fuel for the journey ahead.” Looking after yourself is not taking your eyes off the goal. It is helping you reach it.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Another important reminder is that no student should carry the burden alone. Friends, classmates, lecturers, and support services can provide assistance when things become difficult. Sometimes, a simple conversation can ease anxiety and help put challenges into perspective.
If you are struggling with a concept, ask for help.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, talk to someone.
If you don’t know where to start, take the first small step and reach out.
“Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you are committed to moving forward.”
Celebrate the Small Wins
During a busy assessment period, it can be easy to focus only on what remains unfinished. But progress deserves to be recognised too.
Completing an assignment, understanding a difficult concept, or sticking to a study schedule are all achievements worth celebrating.
These small moments of progress build confidence and motivation.
Every completed task is one step closer to the finish line.
More Than Just Exams
As demanding as this period may be, it is also a season of growth.
Resilience, discipline, determination, and the ability to keep going when things become challenging.
The long hours spent studying, revising, preparing, and learning are not simply about passing the next examination. They are investments in future success.
“You are not only preparing for an exam – you are building resilience for the future.”
The Finish Line Is Closer Than You Think
When the examination papers have been written and the deadlines have passed, students often look back and realise they were stronger than they thought.
The pressure may be intense, but it is temporary.
One day at a time.
One task at a time.
One step at a time.
The finish line becomes closer.
