34 Distinctions and a Prestigious Shield: Nazima Hamid’s Berea College Success Story

Nazima Hamid achieved a near perfect score of 34 distinctions from 37 modules. One of five students to receive the prestigious Rector’s Top Achievers Shield. A qualification completed with an academic record few students achieve. For Nazima, these numbers tell only part of the story. Behind them, is a journey of discipline, commitment and a genuine love for Public Relations with Journalism specialisation that developed during her time at Berea College of Technology.

Nazima did not originally plan to study Public Relations. Her first choice was Business Management at Durban University of Technology, but a late application changed those plans. She eventually enrolled for Public Relations at Berea, a decision that would lead to one of the most successful academic journeys of her student career. “I fell in love with Public Relations instantly,” says Nazima. “I really enjoyed the course and everything about it.” What began as an unexpected choice became an opportunity to excel.

34 distinctions out of 37

For Nazima success was never about leaving things to the last minute. With 34 distinctions across 37 modules, she built a strong academic record through consistent effort, careful planning and staying ahead of her workload from the start of her qualification. “Getting 34 distinctions out of 37 modules was not easy,” she says. “It required 100% commitment from me.” Her commitment earned her the Rector’s Top Achievers Shield, one of Berea College’s prestigious academic honours.

The Berea College experience

While her determination was central to her success, Nazima credits the environment at Berea College of Technology as an important part of her journey. She remembers lecturers who were willing to give students individual attention and go beyond simply presenting lessons.
“Even if I was the only student in class, the lecturer would continue teaching as if the class was packed,” she says.

That personal approach gave Nazima the opportunity to ask questions, receive support and develop confidence in her abilities.

Her parents also played an important role, supporting her throughout her studies and giving her the space she needed to concentrate on her academic work.

Turning achievement into ambition

With her qualification completed and the Rector’s Top Achievers Shield among her achievements, Nazima is now looking towards the media and entertainment industry. She hopes to use her Public Relations knowledge to establish herself as an artist manager and eventually build a brand of her own. She also plans to study Project Management to broaden her skills and complement her career ambitions.

“I want to broaden my horizons and study Project Management,” she says. “I feel that it will blend well with my career ambitions.”
Nazima’s story is not simply about academic excellence. It is about finding an opportunity at Berea College, embracing it and turning an unexpected beginning into an achievement worth celebrating.
