Why Choose the Programme?
Light current is often referred to as electronics engineering and involves the use of heat, energy, and lighting for power distribution. An entry-level technician in light current or instrument engineering will learn about various instruments and will build their knowledge on the Theory of Engineering Drawing, Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, Instrument Trade Theory and Logistics. You will work closely with qualified engineers and will take their blueprints and put them into action, for example through the building of circuits for various electronic devices.
Course Information
You may enter the programme, with any one of the following:
- Grade 10, 11 and 12
Mathematics and Physical Science is not a requirement.
- Instrumentation Technician – Pay Estimate: +/- R150 000 to R500 000 per year

Customised study materials which meet the programme outcomes can be accessed from the Learner Management System, Moodle. A prescribed book list is available from the academic manager at the start of the programme, although the study guide available on Moodle will sufficiently cover the exam requirements.

On successful completion, you will receive an N2 statement of results. You may use this to enter trade school, subject to the entry requirements of the relevant trade school. You may also enter the N4 Diploma Access Programme at Berea Technical College, after fulfilling the entry requirements for the Access Programme.
